Janice Ellis qualified from Newcastle in 1987 and after the usual junior hospital posts and gained FDS from Edinburgh in 1990. She was appointed as a lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 1991 and completed her PhD on 'Calcium Channel Blocker Induced Gingival Overgrowth' in 1998.
She completed Specialist Training in 2003 and is currently Senior Lecturer and Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry within the School of Dental Sciences of Newcastle University. As Academic Lead for the delivery of undergraduate teaching in removable prosthodontics her teaching interests include implant supported overdentures and the management of tooth loss.
She is Chair of the 'Skills Training Facility Group' and has been the driving force for the introduction of reflective electronic portfolios to enhance student learning. Her main research interest is now implant supported overdentures where she has been successful in gaining MRC funding to investigate the process by which treatment options are negotiated.
Other areas of current research include the use of magnets in restorative dentistry, and the use of qualitative research methods to identify themes relating to the edentulous patients eating related quality of life, the challenges of being edentulous and patients' aesthetic expectations.
