James is currently Director for Leaning and Teaching, and Director for Digital Education at Cardiff Dental School. He is also an external examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and a Professional Standards Advisor for the Higher Education Academy. He provides postgraduate training for Health Education England, and also for the Ministry of Defense.
After completing a BSc with honours in Zoology, James received his BDS with distinction in restorative dentistry in 2005.
He completed his General Professional Training and, soon after, was successful in becoming a member of the dental faculty of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh (during which he won the FDGP Case Study Award).
He was appointed as a Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 2012 at Newcastle University, and after entry onto the Specialist list, took up a Senior Lecturer/Consultant post at Sheffield University in 2017. He moved to Cardiff to take up a similar role, in 2020. His research interests include decision-making within primary care (for which he won the BSSPD research award in 2007 and the Schottlander oral presentation prize in 2008), teaching and assessment methods, the nanoscale measurement of dental hard tissues, repair of composite restorations, and healthy eating interventions for edentulous patients.
