Dr Finlay Sutton

Specialist Prosthodontist BDS, DGDP (UK), MSc, MFDS RCS Ed, MRD RCS Ed, PhD, FDS (Rest Dent) RCS Ed

Title: Practical advice on the use of removable prosthodontics in the restored dentition?

Aims and Objectives:

  • To have see construction methods and function of partial dentures which work like removable bridges, protecting the periodontium of compromised abutment teeth.
  • To appreciate that well designed and well-made removable dentures are a valid alternative to implant supported restorations.
  • To learn a system of partial denture design which anticipates future abutment failure allowing artificial tooth additions onto cobalt chromium minor connectors of the denture at a later date.

Finlay is a Specialist in Prosthodontics based in the UK having specifically chosen to limit his clinical practice to the discipline of removable prosthodontics. Together with his highly skilled dental technician (Rowan Garstang), working in the room next door, they provide superbly functioning and life-like dentures which can profoundly improve their patients’ quality of life.

Finlay particularly enjoys teaching dental professionals how to provide state of the art dentures. As well as demonstrating the techniques used to produce optimal functioning and natural looking dentures another important aim is to ignite enthusiasm for removable prosthodontics, proving that dentures are a valid treatment modality even in the age of dental implants.

Finlay qualified as a dentist in 1993 and spent 6 years in general dental practice, during this time he found denture provision (and prosthodontics in general) unpredictable and as a result very stressful. This led him to leave general practice and gain a further 7 years formal training in prosthodontics and restorative dentistry at Manchester and Liverpool dental hospitals prior to starting his specialist referral practice 12 years ago.

Finlay now concentrates his professional life within three areas of removable prosthodontics, namely; 1. provision of dentures for patients, 2. training/lecturing for dentists, clinical dental technicians and dental technicians, 3. research and development

Finlay loves spending the rest of his time with his family and friends. Additionally, he enjoys running, playing badminton, meditating and reading.
