Professor Walmsley is Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry at Birmingham.
He is head of the teaching unit of Prosthetic Dentistry and Higher Degrees Tutor. His interest in all things IT is at the cutting edge of teaching and learning in dentistry. He has published extensively in both the Scientific and popular Literature in the above areas.
Ultrasonics in Dentistry has become his major research area at Birmingham where he runs a successful research team which is funded by the major UK research councils and Dental Industry. Positions of responsibility include the Peer Review Council of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Treasurer for the Association of Dental Education in Europe and Subject Specialist Advisor in Dentistry to the Higher Education Academy. As Chairman of the European Task Force, he has successfully co-ordinated the update of the influential publication "The Profile and Competences of the Graduating European Dentist". Other appointments include Scientific Advisor to the British Dental Association.
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dentistry and on the Editorial board of the British Dental Journal, European Journal of Dental Education and Dental Update.
Clinical interests include: Speciality interest is Restorative Dentistry with an emphasis on Removable Prosthodontics. He specialises in provision of precision retained overdentures using natural tooth roots and implants.
Hobbies include Music, Sci-Fi, running, playing the guitar and Manchester City.
