Mr Peter Briggs

BDS (Hons), MSc, MRD, FDS RCS(Eng)

Title: What is the problem we are facing with today's ageing population?

  • Peter will update the audience on the expected changes in population demographics, by geography, in England over the next 25 years
  • The presentation will highlight the likely challenges presented to the current and future dental workforce by population demographics and ageing
  • The oral health needs of the older patient will be discussed, to include maintenance and palliative dental care
  • Special care dentistry is currently a very small dental specialist discipline - how can these clinicians best respond to the need of the ageing population and what role will other members of the dental team (e.g. DCPs) play?

  • The current NHS and private GDS business models of dentistry do not always adapt well to the needs of older patients. What can we do to improve this?
  • How can we balance treatment demand and treatment need, and demand-based or need-based funding of oral health care delivery?
  • What will be the specific prosthodontic challenges presented by an ageing population, and what skills will be needed by our workforce?
