Title: Anterior Implants: the intersection of esthetics, biology and technology

Synopsis: Peri-implant soft tissue are the ultimate area where biology meets technology. It is in this anatomical and functional area that most processes of health and disease are actually initiated, maintained or compromised with short and long term effect on the prognosis of the dental implant and its surrounding hard and soft tissues. It is in this area where implant and prosthetic restoration design, materials chemistry and micro-nano-characteristics, and hard and soft phenotype interact and become relevant for long-term biomimetic behavior of our restorations. This presentation will review the relevant known factors that affect the behavior of this critical anatomical area and highlight both the changes that have occurred in the last decade as well as identify relevant areas for future research for the next one.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the relevant known anatomical, functional and prosthetic material characteristics affecting peri-implant tissues.
  • To learn how soft tissue characteristics and relevant grafting procedures may affect site preparation, before, during and after implant placement.
  • To appreciate that the ultimate long-term prognosis of our implant prostheses rests on an adequate understanding of the known biologic behaviors of the tissues surrounding our restorations and on a humble appreciation of what remains to be elucidated.
