Prosthodontic management of the cleft patient

Aims: To discuss different options in the prosthodontic management of the adult cleft patients

Objectives:

  • To understand the challenges specific to treating adult cleft patients
  • To be aware of the different conventional prosthetic options for missing teeth in adult cleft patients
  • To be aware of implant treatment in adult cleft patients and its limitations

 Sarra Jawad

Sarra Jawad is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, working within the Evelina Cleft Service. She completed her BDS with honours in 2004 at King’s College London, having achieved a first class intercalated BSc in Basic Dental Sciences with Physiology in 2001. She has a varied clinical background, having worked in Community Dentistry, General Practice and the Hospital Services. Sarra completed her specialty training at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, along with a PhD in Restorative Dentistry, on the topic of the use of mini implants in the edentulous mandible, having secured an NIHR RfPB grant. Her dental interests include management of patients with cleft lip and palate, head and neck cancer, dental implants, toothwear, /and hypodontia. In addition to her role at Guy’s, Sarra is Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for Workforce for NHS England in London and has recently completed a level 5 Operational Manager apprenticeship.
